Lockie Leonard - Love, Teenage Relationships and Growing Up

Prior to reading Lockie Leonard, we identified these as three potential themes. I think it has become very clear that they are big ideas, or themes, that the novel, or text, will explore. What, so far, is Tim Winton trying to say about growing up, teenage relationships and love?

Remember, everyone's interpretation will be different (although there may be similarities). As long as you supply evidence, in the form of textual examples and quotes, then explain your interpretation, your opinion can be respected.

So, tell us, what do you think he's trying to say? Hopefully your comment will spark response from others and others will spark a thought that you want to post about. This is intended to be a conversation that helps us to understand what the text is saying to each of us.

Oh, and this is my first time doing a blog, so if I've made mistakes, or improvements can be made, let me know.

  1. I think he's trying to say that teenage/high school life is a confusing and unnerving time.

    Some examples:

    When the Leonards arrive at their new home;
"For the first time in his life, he was truly packin' death"

    When Lockie's signing his name on the registrar;
"He couldn't get out of there fast enough"

  3. I think, so far, Tim Winton is trying to say that love, teenage relationships and growing up can be both awkward and complicated.
For example, in chapter 2, Lockie’s mum entered his room and prompted him to talk about sex. Lockie immediately ensured her that he was ‘practically on the pension’, when he really had ‘one for two (or thirty or forty) details he’d like to clear up’, to avoid the potential awkwardness of the situation.

  4. Tim Winton is basically describing the ups and downs of teen-hood, in a boys side of view.

    Some examples:

When Mrs Leonard said, 'It's time we thought about sex,' Lockie, pretended that knew all about it to avoid that awkward conversation.

When Lockie was being bullied by the boys, '...out came the paintbrush and everyone's favourite spread,...'

When he fell in love with Vicki: 'He knew it. He was in love.'
All of these examples, show the roller coaster ride of teen-hood.

  5. I think Tim is trying to explain how Troublesome and frustrating a young child/teenager's life really is. During a young persons life there is alot of love phases, relationships and alot of lessons towards growing up. So while most adults think that kids lives aren't so hard, Tim Winton really looked into what really happens in a young persons life.

As it being lockie had moved from so far away from his normal life. It is quite strenous and frustrating to have to fit in all over again.

  6. I think Tim Winton wants to tell us how growing up and becoming an adolescence could be.Tim experienced love before. At the back of the book has his description about his life when he was young,'He fell in love at nine with a girl who lived down the street'.

Tim Winton wants us to know when we become adolescent, we are going to behave like Lockie Leonard. We will experience things Lockie experienced like 'He was in love'and 'ready to lie down and die of embarrassment' because of our parents.

  7. Fantastic comments so far! People are really getting the hang of using quotes as supporting evidence. Remember that when referring to the author of a text we use their surname, not their first (and generally speaking, the first time we refer to them we would use both their first and surname).

Billie, I'm interested to know why you think Winton is showing us how bad young love can be... I'm definitely not saying your wrong, I'm just interested in how you arrived at that conclusion.

To future posters: Don't be afraid to agree or disagree with others comments, or add to their thoughts, or even question them.

Keep up the always excellent work.

  10. I think the author Tim Winton is trying to tell us that growing up and being in love may be quite difficult, complicated and awkward.

    Some examples :

When Mrs Leonard said to Lockie "It's time we thought about sex," Lockie got nervous and tried to get it out of the way by pretending he knew everything about sex. Lockie just doesn't thinks he's ready to learn about sex.

While Lockie was about to head home after surfing, he met a girl name Vicki Streeton. They talked and later on Vicki kissed Lockie on the mouth. At that point Lockie felt weird as if his heart is pumping real fast. As he went home, The Sarge said "How's the wetty?" Mrs Leonard said "Yeah, how'd it go, love?" Lockie replied "It's changed me life."

  11. I think that Tim Winton is trying to say that growing up cam be really awkward.
An examples is When Mrs Leonard said "I think it's time we thought about sex", to Lochie, he tried to get out of the conversation as quick as he could by pretending he already knew all about it.

  12. I believe that Winton is trying to get the message across that Lockie is growing mentally and physically. Lockie's body is starting to change and he is starting to get urges towards the opposite sex.

One distinct moment where you can see this in full affect is when Lockie is watching Viki Streeton walk past. "Lockie had never really thought about how girls looked until recently," this really shows that he is starting to feel and attraction to girls as his body starts to mature.

Now to every body's favourite subject BOOBIES (hehe). Lockie has started noticing that girls are also developing. Throughout a few pages of chapter three and four he has a fixation of girls breasts especially Vicki Streeton's. This is really when you first see Lockie notice Vicki, "She was twisted round and one decent-looking breast was aimed at him," Here is that start of the obsession.

  13. I think Winston is trying to point out that the hardest point in life is growing up ( puberty).  Because in the  book he has many complication for instance when lockie's mum told him   "it's time we thought about sex" lockie tries to avoid the chat  by telling him his mum "I'm practically on the pension"  this lie makes him feel uncomfortable and that he wants to get away from it ( knowing about sex and green book). Also it very hard  time for lockie because he got into lots of trouble  the first day of school eg. The jerks that lockie told including  the"big and hairy" one gave lockie a 2 nice coats of Vegemite On his "tricky bits". This means he's having a rough time in his life and knows it might get even worser.

  14. i think the author is trying to look at the teenage life through a boys body, through a adolesence's eyes. Showing the suidience the highs and lows of adolensence.

he got bullied and had vegemite painted on his 'tricky bits'.

having his mother try and give him the "sex talk". but he insists that he knows everything there is to know except for 'one for two (or thirty or forty) details he’d like to clear up'. Trying to sneakily get out of the conversation.

became interested in the opposite sex, and their apperance. he took a certain interest in vikki, when he was walking past her all he could think about was 'one decent-looking breast' which was 'aimed at him'. and soon found himself in a relationship with vikki.

    etc.

  15. I agree with everyone’s comments so far. Right now, I reckon we’ve all got around the same perspective of things in ‘Lockie Leonard’ but that might change as we read further. :)

  16. I agree with everything everyone has said so far and there is nothing I can really add except that I think that he is also trying to show us how you can't have things like a relationship and friends without trying to connect with people. You can't make friends without meeting people and talking to them. At the beginning Lockie didn't "know a single person" but eventually he meets Vickie and meets more people. That is the other thing I got out of it, y'all have pretty much covered the rest :3

  17. I agree to everyone's comment so far as well. Many or most of our comments are mainly based on how hard life might be such as our actual life. I also agree to Geena about how things might change as we read further. This means all our comments are not 100%, even though all our comments are basically similar. ^.^

  18. I think everyone has hit the nail on the head at this point. I would like to see, when we read on, whether our themes/ideas were correct.
